Officine Panerai presents the official watches of the 35th America’s Cup. The prestigious sailing race was first held off the south coast of England in 1851; since then it has become the most celebrated of its kind. Also, the America’s Cup is one of the oldest sporting events.
The Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic Acciaio 44 mm is a special edition, limited to 300 pieces. This classic Panerai is revisited, personalised with the colors and the logo of the America’s Cup. It is a creation of great simplicity, minimalist in design and fundamental in function, with characteristics which make it a perfect watch for use at sea. There are also the Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica 44 mm and the Luminor 1950 Regatta Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio 47 mm.
Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic Acciaio 44 mm
The case of the Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic was inspired by that historically created by Panerai for the commandos of the Italian Navy. It is made from stainless steel, as is the lever device protecting the crown, on which it exercises a light pressure, protecting it from accidental shocks and helping to guarantee water-resistance to the 30 bar.
The polished bezel surrounds a classic Panerai black dial with its sandwich structure, on which the large luminous linear markers and figures, the date at 3 o’clock and the small seconds counter at 9 o’clock are all perfectly legible, even under conditions of little or no light. At 6 o’clock the phrase America’s Cup is printed in blue, and with the red of the seconds hand and the white of the other indications on the dial, it recalls the colors of the logo of the celebrated competition.
The official logo of the America’s Cup appears in relief on the solid steel screw back.
Inside the Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic is the P.9010 automatic movement with a power reserve of three days, made entirely by Panerai. The energy needed to accumulate the power reserve of three days is stored in two barrels whose springs are wound by a directional oscillating weight. The balance oscillates at a frequency of 28.800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).
The black strap of the Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic is made of leather. It has the logo of the competition heat-embossed on both sides and it is finished with double sewing in contrasting blue and red threads.
Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica 44 mm
This model is the official watch of Oracle Team USA – the title holder. Made from a special synthetic ceramic obtained from zirconium oxide, the case of the Luminor 1950 is light and strong, with a uniform matt black appearance and the look of a sports watch. The bridge lever device is also made of this ceramic. The Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica is water-resistant up to 10 bar. The titanium back is screwed in place and it carries the logo Oracle Team USA, the inscription 35th America’s Cup and a drawing of the legendary trimaran of the defending team in relief.
To make them easy and clear to read against the black dial, the chronograph minutes and seconds hands are positioned centrally and distinguished by the colors of the America’s Cup: the seconds hand is blue while the minutes hand is red. The two small counters use the same colors to make their indications clear.
On the flange is a useful red tachymeter scale in knots, which enables the speed of a vessel over a given distance to be determined.
The Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica is powered by the P.9100 manufacture calibre. The movement is a chronograph with a flyback function, which enables the moving chronograph hands to be zeroed and instantly restarted by a single pressure, without needing first to stop it moving and returning it to zero. The push-piece which controls the stopping and starting of the chronograph is at 10 o’clock, while the push-piece at 8 o’clock activates the flyback function and zeroes the chronograph after it has stopped.
This calibre also provides a power reserve of three days and works at a frequency of 4 Hz.
The Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica is also a limited edition – Panerai will be making 200 of these. They all come with a leather bracelet, including a double sewing in contrasting blue and read threads.
Luminor 1950 Regatta Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio 47 mm
With this watch, Panerai also honors the Oracle Team USA. The Luminor 1950 Regatta Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio is an automatic chronograph, fitted with the Regatta countdown mechanism. A red push-piece at 4 o’clock causes the central red chronograph minute hand to move back in one-minute jumps, until it is set to the connect countdown position. The push-piece at 10 o’clock starts it all. Initially indicating the minutes and seconds remaining before the start and, once the countdown is finished, the time elapsed from the start of the race. The push-piece at 9 o’clock returns all the chronograph hands to zero.
The black dial of this watch has the classic Panerai design and sandwich structure. On the flange are the 15-minute scale of the count-down counter and also the tachymeter scale in knots we’ve already seen in the last watch.
The Luminor 1950 Regatta Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio is the only of the three watches, which comes with a diameter of 47 mm. It is made of brushed titanium, a material which is light and strong with the bezel polished in contrast. Inside the case works the P.9100/R automatic calibre. It works at a frequency of 4 Hz and provides a power reserve of up to 3 days.
Panerai will only be making 200 of these watches. All of them are supplied with a black strap of untreated leather, personalised with the America’s Cup logo embossed on both sides, with contrasting sewing in red and blue thread.
