It is well known that the „Runwell“ is the flagship of Detroit watchmanufacturer Shinola. As a 4th of July-special Shinola presents an edition, carrying the American colors: The White Watch.
This wristwatch has a white dial which constrasts nicely to the blue numbers and the blue small-seconds dial. The combination is completed by a red leather strap and red details such as the seconds hand. The White Watch features hours, minutes and seconds, but not a date. The design is classic, simple and elegant – and it provides best legibility. Hour and minute hands have an elegant shape and are coated with Super-LumiNova, which guarantees an excellent readability in the dark. Like on the regular Runwell models, the dial of the small second is placed at 6 o’clock.
The lightning bolt over the company logo, just below 12 o’clock, is red instead of orange in this model, suiting the color-code. The flash can also be found on the crown and on the buckle. The sapphire crystal of the Runwell is arched. This generates a beautiful retro look which works nicely with the rounded bezel. The crown can be screwed down to prevent inadvertent changes.
The Runwell is powered by a Argonite 1069 quartz movement. The 46 Swiss Made parts are provided by Ronda. The movement is built on site in Detroit by 12 watchmakers at Shinola. Many watch fans would be glad to see Shinola using automatic or mechanical calibers, however the use of quartz allows the company to offer their handmade watches at an affordable price.
The case is 41 milimetres in diameter and is therefore also suitable for smaller wrists. It is made of stainless steel and quite heavy, nonetheless wearing it gives a comfortable feeling on the wrist. The caseback is a tribute to the automobile industry, which was a figurehead of Detroit for a very long time. Like all watches from Shinola the White Watch has a serial number engraved on the back.
The Essex Horween leather strap is made and handcrafted by Hadley-Roma in Lago, Florida. It is wonderfully thick and holds the hefty stainless steel case reliably in place.
