Mille Miglia: Historical References And Modern Touches

Mid-way between the past and the present, a new Chopard Mille Miglia hits the road this year: the Mille Miglia 2017 Race Edition. With its engine-turned dial finish and its counters inspired by vintage car dashboards, this model honours the legendary classic car rally that Chopard has been partnering. This modern and sophisticated timepiece features COSC-precision.
In 1988 Chopard became partner and official timekeeper of the Mille Miglia classic car rally. This union is based on a shared love of fine mechanisms and sporting performance and has been a starting point for the Mille Miglia watch collection. This collection was distinguished by its sporty watches: high-precision feats of mechanical engineering imbued with style and embodying the spirit of the legendary Italian competition. Each spring, the race sees over 400 teams compete with each other along a thousand mile stretch from Brescia to Rome and back.

For the Mille Miglia 2017 Race Edition a powerful style was drawn from the design of the cars having taken part in the race between 1940 and 1957. The vintage details forge the character of this watch and make it an elegant high-performance timepiece. The chronograph comes with a stainless steel 44-mm-case which is water-resistant up to 10 atm. The form of the pushers is inspired by car engines and the fluted crown resembles a fuel tank cap. The bezel is adorned with an aluminium insert bearing the tachymetric scale which provides an indication useful to drivers in measuring average speed, a decisive facture in endurance racing.
Readability is an essential attribute of a watch designed for competition. The silver-toned dial with its engine-turned finish is therefore enlivened by broad baton-type hands and applied hour-markers painted with Super-LumiNova to ensure perfect legibility under all circumstances. The traditional engine-turned motif composed of tiny overlapping circles, as well as the front on the snailed counters, evoke a classic car dashboard, enhanced by the contrasting bright red accents of the Mille Miglia logo, the central seconds hand, and the chronograph hand.
The case back is engraved with the famous chequered flag that is waved when the cars cross the finish line. The Mille Miglia logo appears as well.

The Mille Miglia 2017 Race Edition hums to the tune of a high-precision, chronometer-certified movement. Beating at 28,800 v/ph, the mechanical self-winding chronograph calibre provides hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph- and date functions while ensuring a 48-hour power reserve at the same time.

The black rubber strap bears a 1960s Dunlop racing tyre-tread motif.
