The Nebula 38 Steel combines a distinctive aesthetic flair and technical skill – its openworked movement ties Arnold & Son’s identity as a Swiss watchmaker to the great tradition of British watchmaking. The result is a harmonious yet striking skeleton watch that is finally available in steel.
Semanticall, the name “Nebula” was chosen because the sculptural movement driving this timepiece evokes an inverted star that has exploded in an ideal orderly fashion. In terms of complications, the Nebula 38 belongs to the family of three-handed watches indicting the hours, minute and off-centered small seconds. Which does not affect its complexity.
The Nebula 38 pushes mechanistic aesthetic to such an extreme that its movement has become its very identity. The dial is reduced to a black lacquered flange, while the calibre mesmerises the eye with its arrangement, layers and curves, its juxtaposed materials and play on solids and hollows. All of the bridges converge from the outside of the dial towards the centre, like perfectly symmetrical rays.
The A&S5101 calibre is the dominant orator in this watch, conveying a message based on technical skill, coupled with balance, measurements and proportions. This hand-wound movement operates at a frequency of 3 Hz and provides a power reserve of up to 90 hours. The structure of the calibre is based on the carefully considered symmetry of the seven bridges. They span the four axes that cross the Nebula 38, creating a sense of visual balance. On the dial side everything is clear, visible and structured. The functional elements adhere to a mirrored design, so the small-seconds function at 7 o’clock is twinned with the balance. To maintain this sense of symmetry, Arnold & Son moved the winding mechanism to the case back.
The Nebula 38 is housed in a 38 mm steel case which provides a water-resistance of 3 atm and is equipped with a domed sapphire crystal featuring anti-reflective coating. The case back is also made from sapphire crystal.
The Nebula 38 Steel is complemented by a calfskin strap, available in various colors.
